The "Z-Machine" is a virtual machine (VM) or engine for adventures. In addition to the original from Infocom, there are several implementations as Public Domain (PD) and under other licences.

The Z stands for Zork, the first adventure game published by Infocom. The programming language in which the adventure games were written is called "ZIL" (stands for Zork Implementation Language), and the corresponding compiler is known as Zilch. However, this has not yet been officially published.
