An opened D64 disk image on Emulator VICE.

A D64 file is a disk image that represents a single-sided disk as used in a 1541.

The D64 file itself is made up of the individual 256-byte sectors of the disk arranged by track. The sector dumps are optionally followed by a series of bytes (one per sector) representing an error code which could be returned when an attempt is made to read that sector.

As there is no magic or meta data in the D64 file, detection of format itself, or content can only be done by looking at the file name and size.

A typical 35-track D64 file with no sector error data is 174,848 bytes (683 256-byte sectors).
