Description[edit | edit source]
Apeshit, also Ape Shit, is a fast-paced game that is operated by just the fire button. The game belongs into the category that we would nowadays describe as casual game. At the same time, it is an entertaining "high score chaser" - i.e. a game where the main goal is to achieve a high score.
Game principle
You control a cute little monkey that loves bananas and fears insects. On the left tree it always climbs downwards, on the right tree trunk it always climbs upwards. The aim of the game is to avoid the insects by jumping back and forth. However, if you touch the ground or the top of the tree, the game is over. Each successful move to the other tree trunk brings one point, and catching a banana quickly brings extra points.
Design[edit | edit source]
The game is brightly coloured and implements the graphics in different modes.
Graphics[edit | edit source]
The game has brightly coloured, high-quality graphics in comic style. Different graphic formats are used in different parts of the game. The title picture as well as the background picture in the game consist of pretty multicolour-bitmap-graphics. In the introductory sequence, the gaudy comic style was charmingly translated into edgy ASCII character set graphics, while the game's start screen uses Hi-Res graphics.
Sound[edit | edit source]
The game features well-done in-game music by Magnar Harestad and a loading screen tune by LukHash, who are both musicians from the group Megastyle.
Hints[edit | edit source]
The game - which is only operated with just the fire button - is about maximum high score hunting. Every jump to the other tree earns you points. Collecting the banana brings extra points.
Operation[edit | edit source]
After loading and setting up the intro screen with background music, the introduction (ASCII screen with 4 pages) can be displayed by pressing the space bar. The keys of the keyboard have the following functions here:
- space : Scroll forward.
- CBM : Scroll back.
- RUN/STOP : Cancel the introduction and start the game.
After the actual start screen appears, the F8 key can be used to activate (grey frame) or deactivate (black frame) the trainer function. Likewise, as is displayed at the bottom of the start screen with the texts "Cheats enabled" and "Cheats disabled". When playing with the trainer activated, the high score is not saved.
Controls[edit | edit source]
The game's controls are designed for maximum ease of use and are controlled entirely with the fire button (joystick in port 2). In the game description on the download platform itchi.io, the makers mention that they explicitly thought of the SIBUGA controller in the concept of the game.[1]

Solution[edit | edit source]
- Jump back and forth as fast as you can, as well as avoiding the faster insects...
- Catch bananas to get a maximum score...
- Don't wait too long for the monkey to reach the ground or the top of the tree because then a crash is inevitable.
- Touching the funny jungle insects (spider, ant, grasshopper or scorpion) will result in the monkey falling from the tree in terror
- Some little animals have a camouflage mode...
- And finally: play, play and play...
Cheats[edit | edit source]
The game has a built-in trainer that can be switched on and off in the start menu (with F8). If you play using the trainer mode, the high score is not saved.
In the CSDb there are also cracks with trainer function.
